This awakening happens slowly because you, yourself, slow down the process. You don't want to see what you begin to see. It's unacceptable, it can't be. This initial refusal slows the process down.
But it's understandable, the system needs time to adjust to the new "truth". Nevertheless, inspite of your refusal the seeds of your awakening grow, no matter how strongly you fight it back. And your situation becomes more and more painful, and, to some degrees, even appaling. But you can't stop it. It's a process, it will stop when it's done, not before, not after.
It's a deep unsettling process where everything falls apart inside. While outside, it may even become more brilliant before its complete crashing down.
What a disaster: a real Götterdämmerung!
Jung described it as a deep psychological individuation. Nothing to do with a blissful ascension towards the Light that romantically embellishes our evolution dreams, it's the drastic collapse of the ego, that in its falling apart leads to a temporary loss of motivation and to the "dark night of the soul".
He spoke of the "awakening paradox" that leaves individuals feeling empty and disillusioned because they see through the illusions of their ego-driven lives.
It's a process that brings emptiness rather than passion. The society-driven goals become totally meaningless.
The spiritual awakening means allowing the Self (the true, inner organizing center) to replace the persona (the social mask). This individuation involves confronting the shadow: the hidden, ignored, or despised parts of oneself, that often holds "90% gold", as Jung described this hidden treasure of ours.
In order to discover one's true self we have to go through a "Soul Detox", a necessary phase where the false motivations, people-pleasing, and ego-centered survival mechanisms are purged.
This process forces a person into what Jung calls "Nigrado", a term used in alchemy, that represents a "blackening" phase where the old self dies.
"Nigredo, or 'blackness', is the initial, crucial stage of the alchemical Great Work (Magnum Opus), representing decomposition, putrefaction, and the breaking down of matter into a uniform black substance. It symbolizes the "dark night of the soul," where old forms are destroyed, shadows are confronted, and personal illusions are dissolved before spiritual renewal can occur." (Wikipedia)
The "nigrado" phase can last months, years, and it is the most devastating time you'll ever experience! Nothing holds anymore, everything, literally every single thing of your life falls apart. No anchor is left, you feel like drowning in a sea of lies, falsities, fakeness, that you discover not to resonate with!
If you manage to go through that hell you resurrect eventually. Usually in the darkest moment when you realise nothing is left and you experience being completely insignificance... suddenly something shifts inside. You were still grieving and didn't realise your system was shifting but at some point you acknowledge your change inside.
You mainly discover that you don't care. All what seemed so incredibly relevant before, now it's not. And you feel perfectly fine in not caring. You don't justify to yourself nor to the world. Your life becomes simpler and simpler. Your existence hasn't changed: you changed, and eventually everything turned out completely changed! You realise that your defeat has become your sublime victory. And this is a real spiritual paradox
